Ben Markus was evacuated to East Sussex during the war, where he learnt how to defend himself according to the ancient Malaysian art of Chang-Choi. The basic principles and ideological idiosyncrasies served him well when, in 1958, a freak storm resulted in a complete blackout of half of Wiltshire.
When he eventually reached adolescence, a plague of scurvy managed to wipe-out the entire population of his hometown, leaving Ben alone and confused with only a poultice of sacrificial rice, a small Gambian rug and a one-legged dog called Lucky.
Some sort of an existence was eked out until Lucky died whilst attempting to lay-out every grain of rice in a meta-physical representation of the Ides of March, using the rug as his canvas. The resulting conflagration meant that there was only one thing left for Ben - the Blues.

All, some or none of the above is true or false, but it goes some way to explain the sonic palette that the Ben Markus Band work upon and within. Creating lush panoramic soundscapes using electronic paramours may well be a worthy and artistic sacrifice, but the BMB play a more epochal game using guitars and voices to emote their hardened, experienced synergy. Some people may well call it the Blues - the Ben Markus Band think of it much more as a meal: a starter of the truth, a main course of life, followed by the sweetest dessert of love.

The Ben Markus Band may not change your life - but they will teach you a little something about it.
